Why October
Two reasons. Paint sealants and waxes bond best to clean, dry paint in mild weather, and you will not get many of those days after Halloween. And whatever is in the interior right now — the summer sand, the coffee, the crumbs — is about to be sealed in under closed windows, wet boots and road salt for five months. It is far easier to clean it out now than in March.
1. Exterior: wash, decontaminate, seal
Road salt does not just sit on paint; it holds moisture against it and works into chips and edges. A good layer of protection makes salt and slush rinse off instead of bond on.
- Wash properly — hand wash, including door jambs, lower panels and wheel wells where salt collects.
- Decontaminate — an iron remover pulls out the bonded brake dust and rail dust a wash leaves behind. Protection applied over it lasts noticeably longer.
- Protect — a spray wax lasts a few weeks; a hybrid ceramic sealant lasts months. Going into winter, months is what you want. This is the exterior half of a Titanium Full.
2. Interior: deep-clean it now
Stains that are damp and cold set harder and smell worse. Get seats, carpets and mats steamed and shampoo-extracted while the car is still dry inside. If it has been a year or more, or there is a dog, this is the moment for Titanium's 2-stage shampoo; otherwise Gold does the job.
3. Swap to rubber or all-weather mats
Carpet mats soak up slush and salt and wick it into the carpet underneath. Rubber trays hold it. Store the carpet mats clean and dry, put them back in April. If you keep carpet mats in, at least make sure they are clean going in.
4. Glass, seals and the small stuff
- Clean the inside of the glass. The film that builds up over summer is what makes windows fog and glare in winter.
- Wipe and condition rubber door seals so they do not freeze shut.
- Vacuum the trunk and check for anything wet — a forgotten towel or bag becomes a mildew smell by January.
5. Habits that get you to spring
- Shake the mats out weekly. It takes thirty seconds and stops most salt from reaching the carpet.
- Keep a microfiber towel in the door for the glass and for melted slush on sills.
- Rinse the underside and lower panels at a coin wash after a heavy-salt week, even if you do not wash the whole car.
- Book a spring interior early — salt stains come out far more easily before they have been through a dozen wet-dry cycles.
Doing it in one visit
A Titanium Full in October covers the exterior wash, iron decontamination, ceramic sealant, and the deep interior, at your driveway, for $200 final. Gold Full ($160) is the lighter version with a spray wax. Either way, the mat swap and the weekly shake-out are on you.
